Padma Vibhushan Dr. B.K. Goyal was an internationally acclaimed cardiologist and medical educationist. He practiced as honorary cardiologist at Bombay hospital from 1966 to 2018. He was also the Hon. Director Medical Education & Research & Hon. Cardiology at the Bombay Hospital Institute of Medical Sciences and former director-Professor of Cardiology of J J Group of Hospitals and Grant Medical College, Mumbai, which he served in an Honorary capacity for 25 years. Dr Goyal is the only cardiologist outside the United States to have the unique distinction of being appointed as the Hon. Consultant cardiologist to the world famous Texas Heart Institute, Houston,USA. He was also a visiting professor of cardiology at the University of Alabama in U.S. and Visiting Cardiologist to the Oshner Heart Institute, New Orleans.
He was the Hon. Cardiologist to the Armed Forces, Governors, Chief Ministers and Presidents of India. The State Government honored him by appointing him as the Prof. Emeritus of Cardiology for Life He is a Member of the Executive Council of the University of Bombay and presently was the Member of the Senate of Maharashtra University of Health Sciences (MUHS). He alo served as member of the Central Council of Health and Family Welfare and National Council for blood transfusion. Apart from Cardiology, Dr. Goyal was the Hon. Chairman of the renowned Haffkine Institute at Mumbai for 14 years and under his stewardship the Institute successfully developed indigenous polio vaccines which was duly approved by WHO for the first time in the country. Along with being a world renowned cardiologist, Dr. Goyal was a great humanitarian who devoted his time and effort to saving people from all walks of life. He was the Founder-President of several Medical Societies that continue this mission .An immensely charitable man, he carried out thousands of free life-saving surgeries over the course of his career. In recognition of the public service rendered by him he was appointed as the Sheriff of Bombay in 1980. He was conferred the much coveted Padma awards: PadmaShri in 1982, PadmaBhushan in 1990 and Padma Vibhushan in 2005.
